Ice caves, known for their stunning blue hues and intricate patterns, are popular attractions in Iceland, which has glaciers covering about 11% of its territory. Rescuers faced challenges due to the rugged terrain, requiring the use of chainsaws to access the ice. The Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, part of Vatnajökull, has been melting due to climate change, with its decline accelerated since the 1930s. The incident occurred about 300 kilometers from a volcano that erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula recently.
